Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is a charter school? How is LNC different from CMS schools?

A charter school is a deregulated public school. It typically has more freedom and flexibility than a school can get through magnet status or waivers. Charter schools are typically smaller than regular schools, and typically focus on a new curriculum approach, a new school organization approach or some other features that set them apart from what a regular public school would offer.

2. Do you have to live in a certain area to attend LNC?

Any student who resides in North Carolina may attend LNC.

3. Do you have bus transportation?

No, LNC is a carpool only school. We provide parents with a list of students by neighborhood to help them set up carpools.

4. What are the school’s hours?

Middle School: 8:00 am to 3:00 pm

High School: 7:45 am to 2:45 pm

5. What is the cost to attend LNC?

There are no fees or tuition to attend LNC.

6. If there is no tuition, where do you get your money?

LNC is a public school. We receive funding from the State and local counties.

7. How big are your classes? How many students are in each grade?

On average, each class has around 23 students. There are approximately 185 students in each grade.

8. My child has a doctor’s appointment during school hours. What is the process to pick them up early?

Parents who wish to pick a student up for an appointment should come into the office and sign them out. The student will be called from the classroom. Please note that a student will only be released to a parent or someone on the student's emergency contact list. Please note that the High School and Middle School observe a 30 minute quiet time at the end of the school day. If students have an appointment after school that requires them to leave early, they must be signed out at the High School before 2:15 pm and by 2:30pm at the Middle School. No student will be signed out during the last 30 minutes of the school day.

9. My child will arrive late to school because they have an appointment. What do I do?

If your child arrives at school after 8:00 am at the Middle School or 7:45 am at the High School, please come into the office and sign them in. Students then receive a pass to get into class.

10. How do I contact my student’s teacher?

All LNC faculty and staff members have an email address. In addition, parents may leave a message for teachers via the school's phone system.

11. My child is ill and cannot attend school. Should I call the school?

It is not necessary to call the school. Please send a note stating the reason for the absence when your child returns to school. If a note is not received, the absence will be marked “unexcused.”

12. What is the process for reserving the LNC rock?

Parents who want to paint the rock to honor their students should call the High School office (704-875-3389) or Middle School office (704-948-8600) to reserve a date. We ask for a $5 donation to the school. As we are unable to control unscheduled visits that occur at night and on weekends, please be aware that we cannot guarantee that your message will not be painted over by someone who did not make prior arrangements.

13. I want to help out at school. Who should I contact?

LNC has a very strong and active PTO. Our school depends on the wonderful parent volunteers who help us accomplish so much throughout the year. Parent participation in our school is beneficial to all. Please click here (Middle School PTO) or click here (High School PTO) to get involved.

14. My student forgot his lunch / homework / socks / project. Can I take it to him/her?

We will not interrupt instructional time to deliver lunches and other items left at home. Items brought to the office for students will be held at the front desk until the student is called at lunch or at the end of the school day.

16. Where can I get the school calendar?

17. Can I attend a Board meeting?

Yes, Board meetings are open to the public. You can find out dates and time of Board meetings by clicking here.

18. What is the proccess if my company or I want to make a donation to the school?

19. What's the earliest I can drop off my kids and the latest I can pick them up?

The earliest you can drop off your child at the High School is 7:15 am and 7:30 am at the Middle School. Please pick up your child by 3:30 pm at the High School and 3:45 pm at the Middle School.
 
 

20. If my child gets sick at school, is there medication available?

School personnel will not administer any medication to students unless they have received a LNC medication form properly completed and signed by both the doctor and parent/guardian, and the medication has been received in an appropriately labeled container. We will not make an exception to this procedure.

21. How can I ensure you have my correct address & phone/emergency phone contact?

At the beginning of the school year, we send home a Student Emergency Information form. Please return the completed form to school. If your contact information changes during the school year, please notify Sue Scott (704-948-8600 or sscott@lncharter.org) or Jane Vizard (704-875-3389 or jvizard@lncharter.org) at the High School.

22. If I have concerns with a teacher, who should I contact?

Please first contact the teacher to share your concerns, then the team lead if the problem is not resolved. If an issue is still unresolved, you may contact Michelle Harrison (704-948-8600 or mharrison@lncharter.org) at the Middle School or Terri Costa (704-875-3389 or tcosta@lncharter.org) at the High School.
 
 

23. Can I have lunch with my child?

Parents are welcome to join Middle School students for lunch in the Middle School Cafetorium or High School students in the Multi-purpose room. Please arrive a few minutes before lunch begins to sign in as a visitor at the school office.
