We Are LNC!
Our History
Lake Norman Charter began in 1996 with a bold idea: a group of dedicated parents envisioned a school in north Mecklenburg County where rigorous academics, character-driven leadership, and a commitment to service defined every student’s experience. Their vision—centered on providing an exceptional public education—became reality when the State of North Carolina approved the school’s charter in March 1998.
LNC opened its doors in August 1998 to students in grades 5–7, and the school quickly established a reputation for high expectations, strong community partnerships, and an unwavering focus on student achievement. As demand for an LNC education grew, so did the school. In 2007, the permanent middle school building opened, and that same year LNC expanded to include a high school. In June 2011, LNC proudly graduated its first senior class—students who earned more than $10 million in scholarships and went on to attend some of the nation’s most selective universities. Recognizing the importance of cultivating academic excellence from the earliest years, LNC Elementary opened in 2018, making LNC a full K–12 school.
In 2019, we celebrated two decades of excellence, followed in 2023 by our “Silverbration”—a milestone honoring LNC’s legacy as one of North Carolina’s longest-serving charter schools.
Our commitment to academic opportunity continues to guide our future and LNC's second elementary school is scheduled to welcome students for the 2026–2027 school year.
Throughout our history, Lake Norman Charter has remained dedicated to preparing students for lifelong success through rigorous academics, leadership development, and service to others. Today, that founding vision continues to propel our growth, inspire our community, and shape the experiences of thousands of students who call LNC home.
