Title IX

Lake Norman Charter School does not discriminate on the basis of sex in its education programs or activities and is required by Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 and federal regulations to not discriminate in such a manner. This requirement extends to admission and employment. The board will not tolerate discrimination on the basis of sex, including any form of sexual harassment as that term is defined under Title IX, in any program or activity of the school system.

The McKinney-Vento Act

The McKinney-Vento Act defines homeless individuals as those who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence. Those who qualify have rights to:

  1. access to education and educational support;
  2. enroll in school immediately, even if they do not have documents that are usually required for enrollment;
  3. attend classes and participate in all school activities, even if they do not have school supplies or uniforms; and
  4. continue in their school when the family moves to a new location, if this is in their best interest, and to receive transportation to their school. [42 U.S.C. §§ 11431-11435]

Section 504 Policy

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination against persons with a disability in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

Section 504 defines a person with a disability as anyone who:

  1. has a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity such as caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning and working;
  2. has a record of such impairment; or
  3. is regarded as having such an impairment

Parental Involvement Policy

The Board of Directors of Lake Norman Charter believes that parent and family involvement must be aggressively pursued and supported by our communities, in homes, schools/colleges/universities, neighborhoods, businesses, faith congregations, organizations and government entities by working together in a mutually collaborative effort. As such, the board is committed to developing policies to effectively involve parents in schools and in their child’s education. N.C.G.S. § 115C-76.20(b)(3).

Instructional and Media Center Materials Policy

It is the intent of the LNC Board of Directors that the school make available to all students the best available instructional and supplementary instructional materials, as well as media center resources. This includes textbooks, instructional aids and equipment, audiovisual materials, supplementary books and resources, and media center books and resources. A list of media center materials shall be established for each school level and shall be surveyed and updated on an annual basis

Comprehensive Health Education Policy

The LNC Board of Directors is committed to a sound, comprehensive health education program that provides students with accurate information and encourages them to be responsible for their own health and behavior. The Board recognizes the primary role of parents in providing for the health and well-being of their children and seeks to involve parents as provided in this policy. Our health education program will, at a minimum, meet all legal requirements, including covering the Standard Course of Study established by the North Carolina State Board of Education for graduation.
