Meningococcus can cause infections in the brain (meningitis) or bloodstream (sepsis). The disease is so fast and serious that a healthy child who gets it can be in a coma or die within hours. One in 10 people who are infected will die.

What are the Symptoms of Meningitis?

Meningitis can progress quickly—and be fatal—so it’s important to know how to spot the symptoms. Early signs and symptoms of meningitis may resemble the flu, but symptoms can quickly become very serious. Although meningitis is uncommon, it can be dangerous.

Common symptoms of meningitis include:

• Sudden fever
• Severe headache
• Stiff neck

Additional symptoms of meningitis may include:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Sensitivity to light
• Rapid breathing
• Limb, joint, and muscle pain
• Cold hands and feet
• Confusion
• Rapid spread of pink to purple rash (anywhere on the body, but typically on the torso, arms, or legs)

One dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine is required for individuals who have not previously received it and are entering seventh grade or by twelve years of age. A booster dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine will be required for individuals entering the 12th grade or by 17 years of age, whichever comes first.

Influenza (also known as “flu”) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses.

It is a common illness that typically appears each year in the colder months. Flu can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Children commonly need medical care because of the flu, especially those younger than 5 years old. 

What are the Symptoms of Flu?  

Symptoms may include:

• Fever or chills (though not everyone with the flu will have a fever)
• Severe muscle or body aches
• Extreme fatigue and weakness
• Dry, persistent cough
• Headaches and a runny or stuffy nose
• Children may also experience vomiting and diarrhea.

Unlike a common cold, which develops gradually, the flu hits abruptly. Most people recover within one to two weeks, though fatigue and a cough can linger.

The Influenza Vaccine (Flu Shot)

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common viruses in the United States. It spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact, including intimate contact, and because it is so widespread, most people will be infected at some point in their lives. While HPV is often transmitted during sexual activity, sexual intercourse is not necessary for the virus to spread.

In most cases, the body's immune system clears or controls the infection without causing any health problems. However, there is no way to predict which infections may persist and eventually lead to serious conditions, including certain types of cancer. HPV-related cancers can develop many years—even decades—after the initial infection.

What are the Symptoms of HPV?
 
Most people with HPV have no symptoms, which is why they often do not know they are infected. When symptoms do occur, they may include genital warts or, less commonly, changes to cells that can lead to cancers of the cervix, throat, anus, penis, vulva, or vagina. Regular medical screenings and vaccination are important tools in preventing HPV-related diseases.
