Immunization Requirements

North Carolina law requires that all children must get certain vaccines. This helps protect themselves and others from getting sick. When your child starts kindergarten, 7th grade and 12th grades, parents/guardians must provide documentation to LNC to show their students have their needed vaccines. For more information about these required vaccines visit the NCHHS website.

The Vaccines for Children (VFC) program offers free vaccines for those who qualify.

Garrett's Law

Garrett’s Law  (Senate Bill 444) is a North Carolina statute enacted in 2004 and expanded in 2007 that mandates that schools provide parents and guardians with information about meningococcal meningitis, influenza, human papillomavirus (HPV) and the vaccines that protect against these diseases.  Read more

Kindergarten Entry Requirements

Children entering kindergarten must prove completion of the foundational childhood vaccine series:

  • DTaP: 5 doses (protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis).
  • Polio (IPV): 4 doses.
  • MMR: 2 doses (protects against measles, mumps, and rubella).
  • Hepatitis B: 3 doses.
  • Varicella: 2 doses (protects against chickenpox).
  • Hib: 3 or 4 doses (only required if entering school prior to turning 5).
  • Pneumococcal (PCV): 4 doses (only required if entering school prior to turning 5).

7th Grade Entry Requirements

Students entering the 7th grade (or upon turning 12 years old, whichever comes first) must have all prior kindergarten doses plus two mandatory boosters: 

  • Tdap: 1 booster dose to renew immunity against tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough.
  • Meningococcal Conjugate (MenACWY): 1st dose to prevent severe bacterial meningitis.

7th grade Vaccine Information

12th Grade Entry Requirements

Students entering the 12th grade (or upon turning 17 years old, whichever comes first) are required to receive a final booster:

  • Meningococcal Conjugate (MenACWY): 1 booster dose.
