Week of February 28

3/3/22: LNC 0 - Charlotte Latin 21
The boys played a really good team.  Led by Stevie Parker on ground balls and Bryson Armstrong on defense, the Knights are working hard and getting better.
3/1/22: LNC 0 - Holy Trinity 14
The boys played extremely hard against a really good team.  The team showed a lot of heart with new year players Chase Gentile and Andrew Oliver not backing down and showing the home team we are not going to quit!

3/2/22:  LNC 13 -  Charlotte Latin 1
Morgan Gadd struck out nine batters in five innings to record the win. Abby Courtney called a great game from behind the plate and prevented a stolen base with an excellent throw to 2nd base. Sarah Negrete hit a double, drove in two runs, and scored three runs herself. Grace Hamlin also hit a double and scored three runs. Silvy Schild went 3 for 4 and scored a run. Quinn Clark hit a double and scored two runs. Morgan Gadd hit two triples and drove in three runs. Abby Courtney, Joanna Bernard, Callie Genece, Kendall Ruffolo, and Claire Wilson also got on base or scored. 

3/1/22:  LNC 4 - Holy Trinity 6
Quinn Clark struck out eleven batters and pitched the complete game.  Grace Hamlin made some great catches and throws from center field to help with some crucial outs defensively.  Offensively, Mary Grace Brown made the first LNC hit of the season.  Afterwards Kendall Ruffolo got on base which allowed Abby Courtney to drive them in with a double.  At the bottom of the 6th inning, Quinn Clark started a rally with a solid base hit and stolen base.  Morgan Gadd hit her in with a two-run home run over the center field fence which put the Knights up front by a score of 4-3.  However, Holy Trinity’s bats exploded in the 7th to defeat LNC by a score of 6-4.  Thanks to all of the parents, teachers, and students who came out to support the team.

3/3/22:  LNC 18 - Charlotte Latin 5
Corey Bean was the winning pitcher and also had 2 hits and scored 3 runs. Owen Kuhn scored 3 runs and added 3 RBI’s. 

3/1/22:  LNC 6 - Holy Trinity 8
Owen Kuhn had 2 hits, 3 runs batted in and scored 1 run. Andrew Matthews came in to pitch after starting the game at shortstop and shut the Holy Trinity bats down. 

3/3/22:  LNC 3 - Charlotte Latin 0
Alena Dudan scored two goals and assisted Caroline Mercuri; Caroline Mercuri scored one goal and assisted Alena Dudan. Makenzie Bunting defended the goal a total of six times against the other team, the team played a very defensive game with the help of Payton Vest's quick passing, Reece Long's in-field communication, Isabella Thamodharan's extensive technique and Maddison Cotten's constant attacks.

With strong defense, LNC defeated Holy Trinity by one goal. Alena Dudan scored the winning goal, assisted by Caroline Mercuri. The girls played a very defensive game including Mackenzie Bunting, who saved the ball six times overall!

3/2/22:  LNC 4 - Charlotte Latin 5
Our four wins came from No. 1 singles Austin Cunningham winning 8-2, No. 5 singles Ethan York staying mentally strong to win 9-7 and No. 6 singles Aaron Wang shutting out his opponent 8-0. We also had a big win at No. 3 doubles--Ethan York and Aaron Wang won 8-1.

3/1/22:  LNC 8 - Cannon 17
The first away game for the Lady Knights was a loss, but the team is continuing to progress quickly even with a lot of new players! 
Midfield put up a fight with junior Meredith Bordeaux winning 2 draw controls and picking up 3 ground balls. Senior Megan Wozniak had a great game, winning 4 draw controls, fielding 2 ground balls, and scoring her first career goal for the team! Junior co-captain Gaby Bernardo, playing defense and midfield, helped the team in transitions up the field with 5 ground balls, one draw control, and pitching in one goal for the Knights. Senior co-captain Mary Sorvillo controlled the mid-circle with 7 draw controls, a caused turnover, and fielding 3 ground balls to match her 3 goals in this game. Senior attacker Morgan Thomas also had a hat trick at the game and fielded a total of 4 ground balls to keep the Knights in possession of the ball. 

Defender and returning sophomore Jordan Cornellier caused some action on defense that led to a big goal for the Knights! Rookie players Olivia Zvanut, Victoria Saine, Hannah Vance, Sloan Turner, and Sofia Blasucci all picked up ground balls on the field, with Zvanut receiving the title of MVP for the game for her great performance on defense alongside the first-half sophomore goalie Aubrey Hamm who had a 50% save percentage!

The team is picking up new skills and confidence with each game and with the potential seen in every player on the team, the progress they are making will not be stopping any time soon!

2/28/22:  LNC vs South Meck High School

The almost entirely new women’s varsity lacrosse team had a great start to their season! The home opener against South Meck High School ended with a loss, but that’s not to say all went badly. LNC returning senior and attacker Morgan Thomas came up with 2 goals and co-captain and returning senior Bryn Shepler came up with three points, including an assist to returning junior Meredith Bordeaux. In midfield, returner and senior co-captain Mary Sorvillo had a great game as well, scoring 4 goals and winning 7 draw controls alongside rookie senior Megan Wozniak who helped greatly on midfield and on the draw in the second half! Standout defender and returning senior Peyton Graham caused a big turnover as well as assisted in many transitions up the field earning her the title of MVP for this game along with returning junior and co-captain Gaby Bernardo who helped gain possession with groundballs in transition on defense and midfield. Shout out to the two goalies and rookie sophomores Aubrey Hamm and Natalie Barry who played great for their respective halves of the game! All around it was a great first game of the season and we look forward to what else is to come from this amazing team!

3/3/22:   LNC 3 - Pine Lake Prep 0
The Lady Knights struggled to gain momentum in the 1st half, only slotting in one goal the entire half. Pine Lake’s defense held strong until the 14th minute of the game when Haven Stanley (Sr.) crossed the ball to Rylie Cook (Jr.) who tucked it away. In the second half, the Lady Knights came back stronger with a goal in the 43rd minute made by Eliza Rich (Sr.) off a free kick. Continuing their momentum, Kate Robinson (Fr.) made a beautiful cross to Haven Stanley (Sr.) who then scored in the 62nd minute. Both teams remained scoreless until the end of the game with goalkeeper Imani Anzaya having three saves, maintaining her clean sheet. 

3/1/22:  LNC 5 - Community School of Davidson 0
The Lady Knights started out strong with the first goal scored by Reese Robinson (Sr.) off of a free kick in the fifth minute of the game.  Two minutes afterwards, Eliza Rich (Sr.) tucked a ball away from a corner kick opportunity. The next two goals were also scored by Eliza and assisted by Rylie Cook (Jr.).  Eliza finished the half with a hattrick and the Lady Knights headed into halftime with a 4-0 lead.  

In the second half, CSD came back stronger, limiting the opportunities for the Lady Knights. In the 60th minute, Haven Stanley (12th) made a nice cross to Kayla Patel (Jr.) who headed it in for the 5th goal of the game.  Goalkeeper Imani Anzaya made three fantastic saves in the second half and kept a clean sheet.   

3/3/22:  LNC 24 - Cuthbertson 9
The Knights were led by Tyler Price, who had 5 goals and 5 assists. The Knights had 12 different goal scorers in the contest. Quincy McKay made 8 saves in the victory. 

3/1/22:  LNC 18 - Hickory 4
The Knights were led by Jack Dalton, who had 5 goals and 3 assists and Tyler Price, who had 4 goals and 5 assists. 

Men's golf continued their winning ways with a win in their first conference match of the 2022 season in their new Southern Piedmont 3A conference. LNC men's golf has not lost a conference match in four years and has only one loss in the past six seasons. 

Congratulations to the men's golf team on their conference win with a total of 154 led by senior captain Will Dalton and his 35, which placed 3rd. Senior Ben Bailey and junior Brady Rowland followed up with a pair of 39’s.

For the majority of our team, this was their first ever competitive match. They all competed so well. At No. 5 singles, Ethan York played hard but ultimately lost 4-8. At No. 1 doubles, Austin Cunningham and Rohan Manargudi played great together but lost 5-8.
