What kind of instruction can I expect my HS/MS students who are distance learning to receive?
Parents of distance learners at the HS and MS should expect for their son or daughter to receive access to the materials and resources for their child to learn and progress through the curriculum. Support may look different from course-to-course and teacher-to-teacher, depending on the course requirements. For some courses, the resources may entirely be asynchronous in nature, however, your students’ teachers will provide enough direction and multiple resources necessary to allow your child to progress through the curriculum. Additionally, distance learners will have the ability to access their teachers for assistance during office hours (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 2:15 – 3:00 PM at the HS and 2:45 – 3:30 PM at the MS) and during Student Seminars on Wednesdays.
Parents should not expect that two distance learning students will have exactly the same experience or that one distance learning student will have the same experience in every course. While teachers will provide students with the resources and help they need to be successful, it is important to point out that the at-home distance learning experience will never be the same as the in-person hybrid learning experience. This would be the case even if and when teachers were able to “Zoom” their distance learners into the classroom virtually. To have the most success in the distance learning environment, students will be self-motivated, manage their time well, ask for help or clarification as needed and have educational support in their home environments (i.e., a family member who is checking in with the student to ensure they are staying on pace in their class or courses, engaging the teacher if needed, helping to provide a quiet, learning-conducive environment for them to work, etc.)
