Leadership in Action in 7th Grade
Seventh grade social studies teachers Mr. Herron and Ms. Steinbecker and counselor Ms. Kaproth-Glenn have been teaching leadership to their students (in addition to social studies!). Click here to see all of the Leadership in Action skills.
They began with LNC Leadership in Action (LIA) skill “Enthusiasm and Purpose.” To explore the skill our students created 
“Wanted” posters of a goal that they wish to make a habit. Classes discussed how a habit usually takes twenty-one days to form if you are intentional about it. Later in the month, the students reflected on their goal which was created exactly twenty-one days before. Although many of them did not necessarily achieve their goal yet, they refocused, modified or added onto it.
To further apply “Enthusiasm and Purpose” the students took a “Great Discovery” survey to help identify what they value. They used the survey findings to create a rough draft of a mission statement of their long-term goals. The students were instructed to discuss it with their parents and focus in on a “Mission Motto” to post somewhere so they could be reminded of it regularly. 
For the LIA trait of “Integrity and Accountability,” students applied what they learned by creating index cards of small time-wasters that distract them from what their big rocks (goals) are. Mr. Herron and Ms. Steinbecker showed students a video of the analogy of placing the “Big Rocks” first so that the students would still have the ability to add the less important things too. Students were given a river rock as a reminder to focus on the “Big Rocks.” Some of the students even took Sharpies to write on it what they valued the most. Students were instructed to place the rock somewhere they felt they may be distracted at home to help refocus themselves.
The team has additional mini-activities planned throughout the second quarter to further reinforce these leadership traits. More of the leadership traits will be covered in the third quarter.
ONE Access Program Comes to LNC
We are very excited to announce a partnership with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library to bring resources to our students through a program called ONE Access. This program brings the power of this nationally recognized, award-winning library system to our students’ fingertips free of charge, including access to books, ebooks, audiobooks, music, video, research databases, periodicals, courses on Lynda.com, and more! All LNC students have access to this program, regardless of whether or not they live in Mecklenburg County. With the ONE Access program, no physical card is issued. These student “cards” are LATE FEE FREE as a member of this program (of course, students will still be responsible for lost or damaged books). We are working on getting students signed in per teacher requests, but you can also help your child access his or her account if you want to check out all of the amazing resources available. Start by going to www.cmlibrary.org. Students login to their account with the letters ‘lnc” followed by their student ID number (ie: lnc01234567). Their password is their four digit birth year (ie: 2005).
Please note: LNC policy applies to anything students access on their school-issued iPads, including ONE Access materials. Our book/resource checkout policy is based on the LNC honor code. If parents do not want their child to read a particular book or genre, we expect students to respect those wishes. 8th Grade Recognition Ceremony Planning Meeting

Spirit Link Results
Last week’s Spirit Link contest, sponsored by the MS Student Council, was incredibly successful, raising $4,448 to pay for our annual subscription to the ever-popular Brain Pop learning app! With the proceeds Student Council is also able to give our teachers the gift of time – teachers will have an upcoming day to partake in instructional planning. The 6th grade won the overall school competition for links, with Ms. Garges’ class coming in first place. They were followed closely by 5th grade, with Ms. Hammond’s class being the grade level winner. Ms. Pandya and Ms. Hovis’ classes were the winners for 7th and 8th grades respectively. The winning classes receive their choice of an upcoming pizza or donut party. Way to show your LNC spirit!

Homeroom Teachers' Schoology Codes
MS Parents, have you joined your student’s homeroom Schoology group yet? This is the only way your room parent can update you on upcoming celebrations and events happening in your child’s classroom. As a reminder, every LNC parent should have a Schoology account and be joined to their student’s “class of” group, the MS Parent 2 Parent group (access code 2MB34-KX3ZB) and their child’s homeroom group. If you have not joined your child's homeroom group, you can find the code here for your child's teacher. Operation Gratitude
The middle school will continue to support our troops, with the assistance of Dr. Dan Skotzko, this year as we have in the past by collecting unwanted Halloween candy from November 3 to November 9. Last year LNC donated 170 lbs. of candy to Operation Gratitude. Candy donations will be collected before school in each grade's hallway and of course the grade with the most candy will hold bragging rights!
Annual Toy Drive
The Builders’ Club will be sponsoring our annual Toy Drive from November 1 to November 30 to benefit the needy children attending the Christmas party held by the Angels and Sparrows Soup Kitchen. If you would like to donate a new toy for children between the ages of 1-16 years, please have your child drop the gift off in the hall outside the MS office into the big, black bins. They do not need to be wrapped. Thank you for supporting a very worthy cause!
Science Olympiad Parent Interest Meeting
Science Olympiad will have a parent interest meeting on November 7 at 6:30pm (MS, room TBD). Students are encouraged, but not required, to attend with their parents.
